Science for Fish, People, and Place

At the University of British Columbia

To generate collaborative science that is with and for Indigenous Peoples, we must reflect on what keeps Indigenous Peoples, fisheries, and knowledges out of the university, and re-imagine what healthy university-community relationships can look like.

Why We’re Here

At the Centre for Indigenous Fisheries (CIF), we re-imagine traditional ‘lab’ dynamics to build a community of Indigenous scholars and allies that place the needs and interests of Indigenous Peoples at the heart of all that we do. Grounded in this core commitment to conducting collaborative, just science, we aim to engage in and restore healthy relations between fish, people, and place.

Meet Our Team

Our team actively works to build relationships that are enlivened by respect, reciprocity, and interdependence. We call ourselves a “team” – not a lab – to reflect this intentional, relational work.
