Canada Research Chair | Tier II | Indigenous Fisheries Science
Ńit, hi! My name is Andrea Reid, and I am a citizen of the Nisga’a Nation who was raised on Epekwitk (Prince Edward Island). I now live in the Nass River Valley, home of my Nation, and work both remotely and in-person as an Assistant Professor of Indigenous Fisheries at the University of British Columbia, in the Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries, on xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) territory.
With a wonderful, committed team, I lead the Centre for Indigenous Fisheries, working to build momentum and action in support of the study and protection of culturally-significant fish and fisheries – from rockfish, to salmon, to oolichan, and more! In strong and equitable partnership with Indigenous Peoples and organizations, the Centre undertakes interdisciplinary research, collaborative teaching, and youth-centred outreach that responds to partner-identified needs and priorities. Mentoring students in the Centre and engaging with youth alongside our partners are responsibilities that I prioritize and feel honoured to carry. In addition to leading Nisga’a Youth Science Camps each spring and summer, I am also a co-founder of Riparia, a Canadian charity that connects diverse young women with science on the water to grow the next generation of water protectors.
I completed my B.Sc. and M.Sc. at McGill University, followed by my Ph.D. at Carleton University (Governor General’s Gold Medal).
