Kwe! My name is Kahsennaró:roks Maddy Deom and I am an Environmental Science student here at UBC. I am originally from outside of Montreal, QC, and I am Kanien'keha:ka (Mohawk) of Kahnawake on my father's side and settler on my mother's side. I am working at the Centre of Indigenous Fisheries as a research assistant and I hope to learn more about the waters in this area. I find it difficult to learn at UBC's over-westernized academic system, especially in the sciences. I notice that, in particular, the sciences avoid mention of Indigenous land-based knowledge. I am so happy to have been invited to join the CIF and have an opportunity to learn and thrive in a community that values Indigenous knowledge as much as (or even more than!) western-scientific knowledge. I hope to one day work in research and policy that embraces Native knowledge over western knowledge, as well as help facilitate education systems that center Indigenous learners and knowledge holders.
Projects Kahsennaro:roks is Involved in at the CIF:
