Kathleen Ryan
Indigenous Advisory Council
Kathleen Ryan (anungkwe - miishiikeng n’doodem) has focussed the past decade of her career on supporting First Nations governments in the protection and assertion of rights and interests and in the protection of the long-term health of the lands, waters and wildlife of Territories. She has worked on a variety of projects supporting First Nations with the processes associated with the Duty to Consult and free, prior and informed consent based decision making on new and on-going energy projects in their Territories, including Indigenous knowledge and harvesting interviews, land-use map biographies, environmental and impact assessment technical reviews, and the development of scientific and community-based aquatic monitoring programs. Kathleen's passion is connecting with, protecting and upholding our responsibilities to our non-human relatives, especially the water and water beings. She is most proud of her involvement in the development and implementation of the Saugeen Ojibway Nation Coastal Waters Monitoring Program (2019). Kathleen completed her BSc. in Environmental Science and Indigenous Environmental Science at Trent University (2010) and her MSc in Integrative Biology (Ecology) (2012) at the University of Guelph. Her thesis project was sponsored by the Saugeen Ojibway Nation to study larval nursery habitat within the SON Territorial waters for their most valuable commercial fish species (lake whitefish). The completed study was published in the Journal of Great Lakes Research in September 2014. Kathleen is originally from Treaty 3 Territory (Red Lake) and currently resides in Treaty 45 1/2 Saugeen Ojibway Nation Territory.
