We are on Indigenous Lands & Waters
Our Hosts – the ones who hold inherent responsibilities, rights, and relations with the Lands and Waters we are located on* – are the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh), Stó:lō, and Syilx (Okanagan) Nations. We also have many other Hosts as our work draws us away from the university and into communities.
These Lands and Waters are entities unto themselves. By this we acknowledge that Lands and Waters are not simply possessions to be owned, rather spaces of generational belonging, relations, that care for us all.
This Acknowledgement is a living acknowledgement. Canada has attempted (and still attempts) to steal these Lands and Waters from Indigenous Peoples, but Indigenous resistance keeps these attempts in dispute. In light of these realities, this acknowledgement is followed by a commitment to learning about and upholding the laws, protocols, and jurisdiction of our Hosts.
